Chapter 10

Outside her door Alec stood. He had heard her crying, and when she stopped he half expected her to come out and see him standing there, but he didn’t move. Just held his breath waiting. When she didn’t come out he exhaled and was almost disappointed. He didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t a dream. He was here, this vampire girl had been kind to him, helped him every day he’d been here. Took care of him. But she had also almost killed him.

He leaned against the wall and slid down until he was sitting on the floor. He looked to the wall opposite, thinking about nothing in particular. He heard someone walking towards him and quickly looked down the hall.

Aqua walked over and sat across from him, looking at Rose’s door. “She’s really upset you know.” She said plainly. Alec scoffed, as if he hadn’t known that. “I didn’t know that she hadn’t told you about her…. “Condition”.” She didn’t know any better way to explain it without saying the word vampire. “But she isn’t a senseless killer; after all if she was she would have killed you that first time.” When she saw his face twist she chuckled. “She told me all about it, how guilty she felt, how much she wanted to tell you it was her, she wanted to make it up to you.”

“Well she didn’t tell me.” He retorted, venom in his voice. Aqua’s face changed quickly from a look of realization to annoyance to anger.

“Are you only mad because she didn’t tell you?” She said standing, her voice a harsh whisper; no doubt she wanted to scream. "Oh my God is that really all this is about?" Her voice was hard and cold. Alec stood, towering over her.

"No! That's not the only reason! I'm mad because she almost killed me and didn't tell me! I'm mad because no one told me! And had you not have came in I might never had known until the day i saw her sucking me dry!" He was now quite loud, his voice echoing down the hall. Aqua quickly looked to the door, and seeing that Alec fell silent. They both waited to hear her stir and come to see what was going on, but they heard nothing.

Aqua looked Alec in the eyes. "You're an idiot Alec, just one big freaking idiot." She then turned and walked back to her room. Alec stood there a few more moments before going back to his room as well. He lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling for some hours before finally taking off his uniform and laying down to go to sleep.

Rose had heard everything, but she hadn't wanted to see the look on his face just then, no doubt filled with anger and disgust. She had waited until she was sure they were no longer out there before going into the shower to cry. She turned the water as hot as it would go, hoping the scalding of the liquid would burn away her sins.

In her mind she could only keep thinking "I'm sorry", but she knew that didn't matter. It was in her genetics to be this way, to drink the blood of humans. She hated it. All she wanted was to be "normal" like Aqua or Alec or Dylan and Angelene. She didn't want to kill to survive anymore. Soon the water cooled and she waited until the numbing pain forced her out. She put on a plain white night gown and lay down. She laid thinking about her family, her past, her genetics for some hours before a blissful sleep ceased her thinking.
