Chapter 24

He didn’t sleep at all that night. Angelene had convinced him to wait until the next day to leave. He packed a couple outfits, just in case. When dawn came he jumped from bed and started breakfast. He cooked eggs and French toast since they were the easiest, his nerves would no doubt mess with anything more complex.

No one seemed to mind, today there was talking, but it was rather serious, more so then when Octave had first knocked on the front door.

“We can walk him to the gates of the city, but I’m afraid any farther could cause a claim of war between the kingdoms.” Stella was munching on a piece of French toast with scrambled eggs rolled inside. Viren sat beside her, already having cleaned his plate.

“Of course of course, we’re thankful you’ll do this much for us.” Angelene was sitting across from the black haired woman. Today her hair was again blonde, she wore a silk nightgown. Dylan wore black and gray plaid boxers, but his hair was also blonde today, the first Alec had seen the other male with clear blue eyes.

“We ran a check last night and it seems that Octave has put a block over the short path to Castus. We assume it is to keep us from retrieving Rose.” Dylan’s voice was smooth, almost velvet.

“Of course, I bet he already found some old man to marry our poor little vampire.” Stella was condescending. Alec turned off the stove and sat to eat his small amount of food, he’d already lost his appetite.

            “Mmm” Was all Angelene said.

“Do you have any tags for Alec? It wouldn’t be safe inside the kingdom for him alone.” The black haired man seemed less than enthused.

“I’m afraid even if we did that our tags would only aggravate the situation more.” Angelene picked up the empty plates from every one and put them in the sink.

“Alec can I see your gun?” Viren put out his hand and Alec-already in his suit-handed him the pistol. He turned it over his hands and returned it. “It doesn’t seem even close to moving beyond pawn.” His voice was flat.

“Alec dear.” Angelene stood and put her hand on his shoulder, he looked up at her, her eyes sad. “You don’t have to; even we can’t guarantee your safety, are you sure?” Alec stood and looked at every one.

“Rose is important to you all, and it’s my fault she left. I’m going.” He was determined, he needed to do this. He needed to do one thing right. He knew that if he returned home to his family that he could never look at his proud father again if he didn’t make things right. The room fell silent until Angelene and Dylan set them off, watching from the front door as they walked down the walkway and disappeared outside the gate.
