Chapter 37

Rose was losing, flames had eaten away at her dress and hair, her wings tattered at the edges. She slashed with her whip but the prince had seen many a battle front and used tactics against her. He dodged and attacked her incessantly. Finally he burned a hole through her left wing and with a pained screech Rose fell, barely softening the blow with a furtive flap of her damaged wings. Alec raced towards her, by her side as she stood shakily. He suddenly felt the pangs of loss, this was a hopeless fight. They were going to be slaughtered.

“Rose, let’s run, quick before-“ He didn’t finish before the prince sent a fire ball their way, barely deflected by a few slashings from Rose’s whip. Her breathing was ragged as she stepped forward, not bothering to repair her wings.

“We can’t both escape Alec.” She said straightening. “I’ll hold him for as long as I can, just run.” As the blonde swooped down Rose slashed out and entwined the whip around him once more. She smashed him to the ground before keeping a form grip on her weapon.

“Alec felt his legs twitch, readying to flee, but something told him not to, he couldn’t. He wasn’t going to leave her here, he wouldn’t let her die. He couldn’t, he couldn’t face his family again if he did, no he couldn’t. Rose turned to say her farewell to the human. She was crying, but didn’t care, she forced a smile. “Good-bye Alec Cole, it was-“ She didn’t get to finish as she saw he had his pistol raised, not a step farther from the blood thirsty prince. “No!” She screeched as she felt Oleander only a moment from breaking free, sure to rip them apart.

“Rook.” Alec whispered as the gun started to glow a soft black. He pulled the trigger and a bolt of deep blue left the muzzle, aiming for the Prince’s heart. He didn’t even try to block it, assuming the same damage as any other shot he’d taken that day. But as realization hit it was too late, the beam ripped through his chest, tearing clothes then flesh and exiting, fading only meters down the street. The blonde’s eyes were wide as blood spurted and gushed from him. Rose’s whip finally loosened as she fell to her knees in exhaustion and disbelief.

Oleander said some final words in a language Alec didn’t know, but Rose seemed to understand and turned sharply on the dying vampire. Vos adepto haud misericordia.” She hissed as the last inkling of life left the fallen prince, his blood soaking the streets as a strange peace descended.
