Chapter 5

At noon Alec was finally allowed to rest while Rose made lunch. He had been given a tour of the mansion which include four wings not including their own or the master's, each of which had 8 rooms that were expected to be clean at all times. Also the laundry room, kitchen, dining room, 3 libraries, a living room, a basement, and an attic.

She had explained where all cleaning supplies were, and what had to be done and when. Such as meals were to be prepared for the masters and whatever guests where there, rooms must be cleaned before a guest enters, and that when those two tasks aren’t necessary at a given time that any and all rooms are to be cleaned.

Alec sat at a small table in the kitchen with his head down resting on his arms while his head throbbed; Rose stood making them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 'How am I going to remember all this?!' Alec thought as Rose put his plate In front of him. She sat across from him and started eating. He just looked distastefully at the food in front of him as he sulked.

"Eat or else you won't have anything else until dinner." She said as she took another bite. He just pushed his plate away and put his head back down. "I know you're hungry, what's wrong?" He just grunted in response. "Don’t worry, it seems like a lot at first, but we really only work from 8-7 and even then most of it is just making sure things are done, and I've been doing this alone for a few years now and I keep it up just fine, with two of us it'll be no problem." She finished her sandwich and started to wash the dish in the sink.

As she dried it she looked behind her and he was munching slowly on his lunch. She grinned and then poured him a glass of water. As he ate she put a few dishes away that where in the drying rack next to the sink. He figured if she could do this alone then it couldn't be that hard.

By 7 that night Alec's legs were throbbing and so was his head. Rose showed him to his room and he collapsed onto the bed without even changing. She thought soon he would be asleep, so she decided to leave.

"Hey, you wana talk for a bit?" He asked as she turned towards the door. She looked back to him.

"Why?" She asked, more meaning why now, rather than why he wished to talk.

"Well I was just wondering why you work here, I mean do you really need the money?" He asked as he looked to the ceiling.

"I don't get paid; I get free room and board, that's more than enough payment for me." She said as she started walking to the door.

"Oh." Was all he said before he closed his eyes and she left, closing the door behind her.

She leaned against the wall outside of his room, looking ahead but at nothing. "I don't need money; I just need a place to call home."
