Chapter 27

Even though Alec still didn’t know exactly what a general was he assumed that they had some control over these Anima. And so, now at the large steels gate that filled the void between the towering stone walls of Castus he bid farewell to the wolves. “Sorry we can’t join you in getting Rose back.” Stella said giving the younger boy a hug. Alec blushed slightly. She pulled back and walked to Viren.

“It’s fine.” Alec said chuckling. “I started this any ways. Don’t worry, next time you visit the mansion me and Rose will be there to greet you.” He gave a quick wave before walking up to the gate. He looked back once more to see the wolves take form and gallop away. He took a deep breath and turned back to the entrance to the city. All that he could see beyond the gate was a dirt road; a few people wandered the streets. Some stalls were open, selling foods and some clothing. Farther down the road stood short brick buildings, most likely more shops. As he tried to see farther into the town he saw larger buildings, houses and mills. But from here he couldn’t see any sign of a palace befitting their dear princess.

So with one last breath to calm his nerves he pushed open the gate, it took more strength then it should have it seemed, but he managed to get it open enough to slide through. When he was about to push it closed he saw it move itself back into place. He laughed; of course this place would have self closing doors! He turned back to the once alive streets to now see statues.

Well living statues. Everyone had stopped and stared at the new comer. Some sniffed the air, others bared fangs. He noticed all had clouded red eyes. He stood stalk still for endless moments, but when no one came after him he moved forward. He walked past a few of the vampires before he felt shivers run up his spine as they started circling around him.

He put his hand to his pistol, even if it couldn’t kill it could at least delay his attackers if necessary. He kept walking as the coral got smaller, more and more blood suckers closing in. it was that moment that he wished that those old stories of his childhood held true, that vampires couldn’t be out in the sun, that they feared garlic and crosses and holy water. That a stake through the heart could kill.

Now he was trapped, the monsters only feet away. It was at least 20 on one. He heard bickering start about who would get him, raspy male voices and screeching females. Even children! He stood uneasy for a moment before he decided maybe words could get him out of this mess.

“I’m here to see Rose, Master Dylan and Mistress Angelene wish for me to bring her back.” He spoke clearly and calmly, but his words just raised havoc. Voices turned to yells as they bickered louder over the human, as if his speaking meant his blood would be that much better. The clamor died down long enough for a man in front of him to step forward and speak.

The male was in his 30’s. He wore brown pants and a beige shirt, no shoes. His hair was graying despite his age. His eyes- that blood thirsty red, his nails long and as sharp as his teeth. “I’m sorry boy, but just because those reapers want the princess doesn’t mean they’ll get her. We must protect our kingdom!” Several cheers, as if this were a rallying speech to incite war. “We will dispose of you human, and keep our princess in her right full home!” More cheers, a rippling of the crowd. The man came close to Alec, and when he was about to strike Alec pulled the pistol up and aimed it for the creatures head.

“Bang.” He said quietly as he pulled the trigger. A thick blue light shot out, hitting the man in between the eyes. He stumbled backward, but quickly recovered and sprang forward after Alec’s throat. The mass of bodies quickly surged and started to join in the brawl. The human was quickly smothered by so called night walkers, his yells dying under the screams and screeches of the roaring crowd.
